Cork is a renewable material

Cork is extracted from the bark of the cork oak. The ever green tree grows mainly in the western mediterranean area. The cork is an adaptation to forest fires and makes the tree fireproof. The so-called "male" cork, which the cork oak forms in the first years, is useless. It is carefully peeled off, not to damage the bark underneath. From the 20th to about 150 years of age of the tree, the "female" cork is peeled from the tree - every 9 to 12 years. Only this cork has the right thickness to make cork products. At the first peeling the cork still has a very rough surface and poor quality. Only the following peelings have a smoother structure and therefore a better quality. A cork oak can supply 100 to 200 kg of cork in its lifetime. Furthermore, cork can often be recycled.
